AIA D.C. Awards for Canal Park Pavilions

The Canal Park pavilions received two awards from the American Institute of Architects’ District of Columbia chapter: Merit Award and Presidential Citation. Designed by STUDIOS Architecture in collaboration with David Rubin, the three pavilions have become symbols of the highly successful park, book-ending the three-block long expanse. Recalling the barges that used to float along the historic Washington Canal, the pavilions serve as belvederes, performance and art venues, storage structures and shelter. They “float” along the rain garden which spans the three-block long site, and the two “lanterns” which mark either end illuminate at dusk inviting all to enter and enjoy.
