UC Berkeley’s Student Athlete High Performance Center was reviewed by John King, architectural critic for the San Francisco Chronicle, in an article entitled, “Memorial Stadium’s Big Game Showcase.” Undertaken while Partner and Co-Owner of OLIN, David Rubin utilized landscape solutions to resolve architectural and urban design challenges. In a collaborative effort with HNTB Los Angeles and STUDIOS Architecture SF, the landscape team was able to meet the challenges of the project: create greater connectivity within the southeast district by linking the main campus to the stadium across Olmsted’s Piedmont Avenue, preserve and enhance a delicate ecotone, and create a new campus sacred space by defining the roof of the new structure as a landscape plaza while preserving the character of a historic landmark, Memorial Stadium.
