Working with local developer Jaindl Enterprises, DAVID RUBIN Land Collective is defining a vision for the revitalization of a half-mile long post-industrial site along the Lehigh River in Allentown, Pennsylvania. The new social landscape will become the central gathering place within The Waterfront, a 26-acre development currently under construction. The design for the Riverwalk and the common areas will create a lively, mixed-use environment, with outdoor public amenities for residents and visitors to the development’s new office, retail, and residential spaces, which will include affordable and mixed-income housing. The pathway along the Lehigh River completes a missing link along the 165-mile long Delaware & Lehigh Trail that stretches from Wilkes-Barre to Bristol in Bucks County. Once the site of Lehigh Structural Steel, the brownfield site will be remediated, with the riparian ecology restored, undertaken in collaboration with Applied Ecological Services. The Riverwalk will feature a series of programmed and contemplative spaces, including an amphitheater for public events and gathering, dining terraces, and overlooks of the Lehigh River featuring salvaged, remnant structures from the post-industrial site. Future phases will link the Riverfront across the Lehigh River, restoring a train trestle bridge and extending the trail connection eastward.
