In collaboration with STUDIOS Architecture, Howard University, and the Bond Partnership (Fivesquares, Menkiti, & Edens), the redevelopment of the Bond Bread Factory and Washington Railway & Electric Company (WRECO) site creates an iconic destination for the Duke District and its community. A 20,000 square foot public park is the focal point of the development, framed by the permeable historic facade of the WRECO and flanked by residential, commercial, and hospitality. This highly flexible open space allows retail programming to extend outdoors, while providing space for special events including performances, fairs, and Howard’s homecoming celebration. Preserved trusses overhead are a reminder of the site’s rich history. An activated pedestrian alley connects the park through to Georgia Avenue. To bring hotel patrons to its front door, a curbless festival street anchors the site on the north, further expanding the site’s potential to be a part of events and celebrations held within the Duke District.
