Spanning three robust community engagement efforts and collaboration with Philadelphia Parks and Recreation and civic leaders, the Marconi Plaza Master Plan identifies four key improvements to be made for a more functional, resilient, and joyful public space. Distinguishing the core from the edge stands out as the most impactful among the four significant recommendations. The proposed design builds on the park’s original Beaux-Arts geometry by re-enlivening the civic core while utilizing the edge for active recreation. Health and wellness are emphasized by framing new spaces for social connection and defining additional spaces for active programming. Compliance throughout the site is ensured by creating new, gently sloping paths up to the previously inaccessible civic core. Lastly, necessary maintenance and repairs to existing park features, as well as new structures and plantings, will ensure that future generations of Philadelphians will continue to love and enjoy the park. This project has been undertaken as part of the Philadelphia Parks and Recreation IDIQ.
