DAVID RUBIN Land Collective has been engaged to develop a vision for the design of what will become the Town of Miami Lakes new ‘Central Park.’ The use of herbicides and fungicides over many years has resulted in high levels of mercury and arsenic in the 32-acre former Par 3 Golf Course’s soils. Our focus is to develop short- and long-term solutions to remediate the soils and waterways while converting the property into an engaging passive neighborhood park that enhances the identity of Miami Lakes. Huge existing electrical poles emanating from a power station proximate to the course are a prominent feature along the length of the property. The vision takes advantage of the existing poles which must remain, and adds new ones at a lower scale to humanize the massive utility, marking them with festoon lighting that creates an abstracted ceiling for the long room within the site. The design focuses on supporting existing and future residents of the neighborhood by adding walking and cycling paths, native botanical and pollinator gardens, communal pavilions and open lawns for play, as well as parking for ease of access from greater distances.
